OUR BOARD OF MANAGEMENT
Helene McNamara (Chairperson)
Helene has been a member of MVLS for over 10 years. She joined the Board in late 2013 and has been Chairperson since 2014. Her qualifications include B.A/Dip Criminology (University of Melbourne). Her professional life includes varied roles in the welfare field including Youth justice, Child Protection, Disability and Homelessness. She has lived in Ascot Vale for 29 years with her husband and adult twin sons. Her previous Board experience includes 10 years on the Board of Doutta Galla Community Health Service, she is currently Vice President of the Committee of Management of the Celtic Club and a member of the Executive of Labor for Refugees. Her interests include local community activities, support for asylum seekers, book club and politics.
Ben Wyatt (Vice Chairperson)
Ben works at Sladen Legal. He is an experienced senior litigator and has supported clients through their Court cases for over 20 years. Ben has been involved in litigation in all Victorian jurisdictions, from the Supreme Court through to VCAT, since 1989. He has also appeared in the Federal Magistrates Court, the Federal Court and the High Court of Australia. His specialties include commercial litigation, insolvency, Trade Practices Act, Corporations Act, defamation, media law and costing disputes.
Emmanuel Kefalas (Secretary)
Emmanuel has been a volunteer at MVLS since December 2005. He was initially a non-legal volunteer before he joined the Board as a member in 2009 and became Secretary in 2011. Emmanuel also continues to actively volunteer as a legal volunteer at the Monday night drop in service.
John Foley (Acting Treasurer)
Anna is a Principal solicitor at the Office of Public Prosecutions. She holds a Master of Laws in International Criminal Law, a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) and a Bachelor of Arts (Criminology). Anna has a keen interest in the role of the legal profession in promoting social justice and facilitating access to justice. She was a member of the Board of Reprieve Australia, an anti-death penalty organisation, for 7 years prior to joining the MVLS Board in 2016. Anna is a local resident of Kensington and an avid cyclist, hiker, and trapeze flyer.
Alexandra first worked with the Moonee Valley Legal Service in 2015, when she was part of a group of three that conceptualised, created, researched, tested and built the first prototype of FineFixer. In her professional career, Alexandra has worked with numerous organisations in their marketing, PR, communications and digital departments. Holding a Bachelor of Entrepreneurship and Marketing, as well as additional specialised courses in Social Media & Digital and Online Video Production, Alexandra brings a wealth of marketing knowledge to the table and hopes to use her skills to contribute to the community by being part of the amazing work the MVLS does.
Kirsty McIntyre is the General Counsel at the Metropolitan Fire and Emergency Services Board (MFB). She has worked in the public sector at both state and national levels for more than 25 years, providing legal and governance advice to Ministers and government bodies and leading the development of legislative reforms. Deeply committed to social justice, Kirsty has also been a volunteer solicitor and non-executive director at a number of women’s organisations and community-based legal services.
